Innovative ideas and behaviour are often seen as deviant until they change society, while ideas which have been left behind by progress appear deviant in the present time. One innovation which is currently seen as sufficiently deviant to invite a diagnosis and a treatment is computer gaming. From an innocent past-time, computer gaming is popularly presented as a deeply disturbing activity, and the media brand gamers as addicts in need of treatment, anti-social deviants.
For us who argue that games are just another cultural expression, it is important to look at what they can teach us about human society. This article addresses what games can teach us about social norms and deviance. In order to understand this we need to look at games, norms, rules and deviance, and the relationship between these concepts. If games can teach us about human society, perhaps they can teach us something about human behaviour, innovations and deviance.
